Liverpool St Helens responded to recent defeats against Birkenhead Park and Warrington in the best way possible with a gutsy win over Carlisle in week eight of North One West.

Showing great resilience they twice came from behind against the Cumbrian outfit, ultimately scoring a bonus point try in the last throes of an enthralling game of rugby to claim full points Carlisle came off best in the early exchanges which saw their kicker Glen Weightman successful with three penalties and LSH’s Greg Smith sin binned in the first twenty minutes.

LSH responded with a neatly taken try by winger Dan Filson on the half hour mark before Carlisle replied with a score from number 8 Ryan Feeney, converted by Weightman for a 16-5 lead.

Crucially, with half time approaching, LSH reduced the deficit to just four points when Filson, having a fine game, sped down the right wing passing inside to fly half Smith who safely touched down before converting his own try.

The battle amongst the forwards proved to be even throughout with both sides creating opportunities from one of which, another penalty against LSH, Weightman edged the visitors further in front just after the break.

LSH responded in fine style to draw level with twelve minutes to go after a fine run from Ian Stanley was continued by Filson for his second try, just reaching over the line when tackled. Smith converted.

Weightman restored Carlisle’s lead by three points soon after with another penalty before LSH summoned up one last assault on the visitors line bringing a try for winger Jake Hodson, followed by a touchline conversion from Smith and then immediately by the referee’s whistle for full time.
