Captain Joe Root saw his partners fall away as England lost three wickets in less than an hour after lunch on day two of the third Specsavers Test with India.

Alastair Cook (29) and opening partner Keaton Jennings (20) fell in successive balls, before Ollie Pope (10) also departed at Trent Bridge.

The day had begun well for England, with James Anderson and Stuart Broad taking two wickets apiece as India added just 22 runs to their overnight score for a first innings total of 329.

Nottinghamshire drizzle postponed the start time to 11.30am, but England were not unduly delayed.

The second new ball was only seven overs old when England resumed and the hosts took full advantage as Broad made the breakthrough.

Rishabh Pant managed to add only two runs to his overnight 22 before edging an attempted drive back on to his leg stump.

Ravi Ashwin, riding his luck, was therefore left with the tail, and was dropped by Pope at fourth slip off the next over, bowled by Anderson.

Ashwin lasted just four more balls as an inswinger from Broad uprooted the batsman’s middle stump.

India had two wickets remaining, but Broad, at mid-on, caught Mohammed Shami’s attempted slog and number 11 Jasprit Bumrah was bowled first ball.

Anderson is on a hat-trick, but must wait until India’s second innings for his opportunity.

The collapse left England facing a very awkward 40 minutes and nine overs to bat up to lunch in tough conditions.

There was predictably plenty of movement for India with the new ball, but despite the odd edge through slips ,Cook and Jennings did enough to see it through to the interval and cap off a good morning for the hosts.

It was a different story at the resumption, though.

Cook had already been dropped at slip by Cheteshwar Pujara off Ishant Sharma two balls earlier, when this time he edged the same bowler behind.

Then, before Root could face a ball, Jennings went at the other end as Bumrah angled one across him for a second caught-behind to make it 54 for two.

And Pope was caught behind down the leg side, off Sharma, as Jonny Bairstow joined his fellow Yorkshireman Root in the middle.
