England were 46 without loss at lunch on day two of the third Specsavers Test after making short work of India’s tail.

James Anderson is on a hat-trick, but must wait until India’s second innings for his opportunity, after taking the final two wickets as the tourists were dismissed within 45 minutes of the resumption.

India were all out for 329, adding just 22 to their overnight total, as Stuart Broad also took two wickets to finish with three for 72, while Anderson ended with figures of three for 64.

Alastair Cook (21 not out) and Keaton Jennings (20 not out) steered England through a potentially difficult 40 minutes to reach lunch unscathed, despite the odd scare.

Nottinghamshire drizzle postponed the start time to 11.30am, but England were not unduly delayed.

The second new ball was only seven overs old when England took full advantage as Broad made the breakthrough.

Rishabh Pant managed to add only two runs to his overnight 22 before edging an attempted drive back on to his leg stump.

Ravi Ashwin, riding his luck, was therefore left with the tail, and was dropped by Ollie Pope at fourth slip off the next over, bowled by Anderson.

Ashwin lasted just four more balls as an inswinger from Broad uprooted the batsman’s middle stump.

India had two wickets remaining, but Broad, at mid-on, caught Mohammed Shami’s attempted slog and number 11 Jasprit Bumrah was bowled first ball.

It left England facing a very awkward 40 minutes and nine overs to bat up to lunch in tough conditions.

There was predictably plenty of movement for India with the new ball, but despite the odd edge through slips ,Cook and Jennings did enough to see it through to the interval and cap off a good morning for the hosts.
