ST HELENS judoka Owen Livesey followed up his recent gold medal at the Glasgow European Open with silver at the Port-Louis African Open in Mauritius on Sunday 8 November.
Fighting in the -81kg category Livesey was in strong form and scored two yukos against his first opponent Marlon Acacio (MOZ) before scoring three more yukos against Austria’s Marko Bubjana to set-up a gold medal contest with Srdjan Mrvaljevic (MNE).
Livesey scored his sixth yuko of the day to take the lead but missed out on gold when Mrvaljevic scored for ippon leaving the British judoka with the silver medal.
Speaking afterwards the Commonwealth Games champion said: “Was good to come away with a medal.
It was the first of three on this tour so to start it with a medal was good and obviously more points towards qualification. On to Australia now where I can hopefully go one better.”
Livesey will next be in action at the Wollongong Oceania Open on 13-14 November.
