HAYDOCK cyclist Lauren Bate-Lowe continued her progression in the sport with a record-breaking, medal-winning week at the British Youth and Junior National Track Championships.

The 15-year-old SSE Next Generation athlete, who was promoted to the Olympic development programme last year, won two golds and a silver – smashing two national records in the process.

She now aims to continue working hard within the British junior academy – rubbing shoulders with the sport’s elite riders during regular training camps – as she strives to fulfil her dreams of one day making the Team GB Olympic team.

Lauren said: “This year has been a very hard and trying year both mentally and physically.

“I’ve trained different and raced differently all year round than I ever have before so it has been tough.

“For most the year there haven’t been many races so I have struggled keep alert tactically.

“However the peak of my season, the Nationals, was a brilliant week and I came away from it feeling proud and excited.

“Taking my first two national titles and gaining another two national records to the one I have in the team pursuit from last year’s school games was satisfying.”

Lauren’s week started with a silver medal in the Junior/Under 18s women’s sprint after clocking a personal best time qualifying time of 11.88 seconds.

She followed up with gold in the Youth/Under16 women’s sprint after qualifying first with national record of 11.91, significantly going under 12 seconds bench mark time.

Lauren went through the next two days without losing a heat.

The sprint event had to be split over two days because of large amount of riders entered, which again underlined the significant achievement.

She rounded the week off with another gold medal and a second national record in the Youth/Under16 s 500m time trial.

This event is a one-off effort of two laps from a standing start the fastest time is the winner - and Lauren duly obliged clocking a magnificent time of 36.21seconds.

It continues a remarkable progress for a girl who only took up the sport in January 2013 after after her interest triggered by the London Olympics.

In previous years she has been racing against girls older than her, but despite that she has given it a go and learned from each experience.

Last year she won a silver and three bronze medals in the tournament, but again she was riding against older girls.

This year was the first time she has competed on the same playing field against her age group.

Lauren, who trains with Black Line Racing Team, will now wrap her season with the Sainsbury’s 2015 School Games in Manchester in early September.

This will be her last school games, which has made her more determined to end on a high note.

She said: “I hope to ride confidently and gain some experience but also to get some really good results out of the event and learn at lot.

“The School Games is an important event for me especially this year as it is my last race as a youth and also it is important to me that I finish on a high and test how I can carry my form through from nationals!

“Every competition I win or even just take part in I’m one step closer to my dream of one day being Olympic champion.”
