TOWN put aside their recent league form to make progress in the FA Vase by completing a 5-0 demolition of fellow North West Counties side Daisy Hill at New Sirs.

Town dominated proceedings from the off with both Shaun Judge and Greg Harrison forcing saves from the home stopper Adam Thomas. Harrison turned provider when his driven cross from the left just evaded Stephen Edwards on the back post.

Daisy Hill reminded their visitors that they were still in the game when Dan Gregory attacked down the left taking advantage of a fortunate break off a defender before shooting just wide of the Town upright from the edge of the box.

The opening goal came on 23 minutes when Carl Osman found the head of Harrison with an inch perfect free kick and Harrison’s deft touch saw the ball sail into the top corner. Just five minutes later Town doubled their advantage when leading scorer Edwards beat the offside trap and coolly slotted home past the advancing Thomas.

Shortly afterwards Town had ‘keeper Lee Novak to thank for keeping their two goal lead as he did well to turn an effort from Damon Clynes around the post.

Town as they added a third goal three minutes into the second half, Edwards getting his second courtesy of a superb diving header from six yards out.

Almost immediately Daisy Hill could have reduced the deficit as Gregory’s effort from the edge of the area forced a fine parry from Novak and Cole Ashton reacted well to get to the loose ball quickly and block a subsequent shot.

Town added a fourth goal to put the tie beyond doubt. Brian Hatton won a corner for Town and his set piece was met by Judge whose bullet header gave Thomas no chance.

The final goal of the game came on 64 minutes when substitute Gary Pye did well down the left before finding Scott McNair inside the penalty box; with his back to goal he turned his defender before firing into the roof of the net past a forlorn home ‘keeper.

Further chances fell to Town when Andy Newcombe was denied by the woodwork as his right wing free kick beat the keeper but struck the left hand post before being cleared from danger.

Edwards spurned a chance to complete his hat-trick as he beat a defender to a through ball but his initial touch was too heavy and the home ‘keeper was able to gather under pressure.

It was then the hosts turn to hit the post when Howell’s effort beat the excellent Novak but rebounded off the left hand post.

Town captain Carl Osman looked to have opened his account for the club when his strike from the edge of the box beat Thomas but not the right hand post, rebounding into the grateful arms of the Thomas.

The victory means Town will now play host to Parkgate FC of the Northern Counties East League in early October..
