NEWTON'S run of five games unbeaten came to a halt last Saturday somewhat surprisingly to bottom club Alder who prevailed by 19 runs with just one over remaining.
Alder batted first and declared on 257 for 7 after 55 overs. Newton tried seven bowlers with Dominic Chambers being the most successful one finishing with 2 for 25 off six overs.
In reply Appleton and Mike Walkden added 34 runs before Walkden was dismissed for 21 off 26 balls and including two sixes. Vice-captain Chris Chambers joined Appleton and took the score to 80 before Appleton was out for 40.
Chambers upped his scoring rate with help from Danny Barlow and they added 106 runs for the third wicket before Barlow was out for 40.
Chambers went on to complete an excellent century and after he was out for103 with the total on 228 for 6 the tail-enders succumbed to Alder’s overseas bowlers and were finally all out for 238.
Alder took 25 points and Newton 8, which saw them slip to fourth place in the league table.
