St Helens Town won their eighth league game of the season and stay in second place with a six wicket win over Alder.

Town won the toss and had to bowl with the risk of rain later in the day and quickly got going with Phil Murgatroyd trapping Alder's overseas player Hemel Vatekar LBW 1st ball.

Wickets continued to tumble at regular intervals with the Town bowlers sharing the damage reducing the away side to 80-6, before the returning young paceman Mike Stark cleaned up the tail as Alder reached 129 all out.

St Helens knew they would have to be positive in their response with the dark clouds gathering and that's exactly what they did lead by captain Craig Woods and Tony Filson and the pair put on 90 runs for the second wicket before Filson fell for a well crafted 33 from 38 balls.

Woods continued the attack as the rain began to fall and got his side just over the line before the heavens opened as Town finished 130-4 from just 20.3 overs, Woods finishing on 71 not out from 55 balls.

With the business end of the season fast approaching St Helens Town are well placed for both a title and promotion challenge.
