YOUNG boxer Aaron Vaughan emerged from the Monkstown Box Cup tournament in Ireland with a gold medal and the best boxer of the tournament award.

The 15-year-old Rainford Technology College pupil emerged triumphant in an event in Sallynoggin, Dublin which had more than 800 boxers registered.

He won the gold medal after having three bouts and beating Ireland’s European silver medallist in the final – the first time he had ever lost a bout on home soil.

Vaughan also won an English National boxing title at 50kgs in April and has been put in the England team.

Vaughan, from Liverpool, has been boxing since he was eight years old and has had 30 contests.

He fights out of Towerhill Boxing Club in Kirkby where his father Alan is the head coach as well as being involved with the GB boxing set up.

Alan Vaughan said: “Aaron won the Gold medal and Best Technical boxer of the tournament at 13 years of age.

“The tournament has youth boxers up to the age of 18 attending, but winning best boxer is a massive achievement at 15.”
