Nick Blackwell remains in an induced coma after suffering bleeding to the brain following a defeat to Chris Eubank Jr on Saturday night.

The pair went toe-to-toe at the Wembley Arena in a brutal British middleweight title bout, which was stopped in the 10th round after the ringside doctor advised the referee that Blackwell was unable to see through his left eye.

Blackwell was later carried out on a stretcher and taken to St Mary's Hospital in London, where the 25-year-old is set to remain for "some time" according to British Boxing Board of Control general secretary Robert Smith.

Smith said on Sunday morning: "I spoke to one of the doctors this morning and he said there is a bleeding of the brain.

"He's in intensive care, he's in an induced coma and he is resting and being looked after by the experts.

"It's a very normal procedure. They put you in a coma to get the swelling to go down. There's no time-scale. Now it's just a matter of waiting and seeing."

He added on Sunday evening: "There's no change from this morning. He's sedated and staying in overnight. We expect him to be in hospital for some time."

Eubank Jr dominated the fight at Wembley Arena and had earlier bloodied Blackwell's nose in rounds three and four, before landing a number of heavy blows in round seven.

Eubank Jr wrote on Twitter on Sunday afternoon: " Now I've earned the privilege to be called 'The British Champ'. Unfortunately Nick is now in an induced coma... my thoughts & prayers go out to his family & friends.

"He's a true fighter & I whole heartedly believe he will pull through. Appreciate everyone that came out to support the fight #TeamEubank."

The boxing fraternity also used the social media site to send their best wishes to the stricken Blackwell.

World heavyweight champion Tyson Fury wrote on Saturday night: "will u all pray for @nickblackwell02 please ASAP as he has been taken to hospital, God be with him."

Super-middleweight George Groves has spent time sparring with Blackwell in recent weeks.

He wrote: "Don't like thought of a tweet being helpful in a time like this but thoughts and prayers of myself and family are with @nickblackwell02. I hope he comes out of this ok. We've been in the gym sparring together the past month and he's a truly one of the sports great guys."

Former world heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis added his own get-well message: "Thoughts and prayers to @nickblackwell02 and his family at this time! #BlackwellEubankJr".

It emerged Eubank Jr's father, Chris, a former two-weight world champion in his own right, warned his son that Blackwell was in danger of taking too much punishment.

Eubank Sr felt the fight should already have been halted when speaking to his son at the end of the eighth round.

He felt Eubank Jr's best chance of victory was to avoid the punishing head shots and instead target Blackwell's body.

Broadcasters Channel 5 picked up Eubank saying: " If the referee doesn't stop it, then I don't know what to tell you.

"But I will tell you this: if he doesn't stop it and you keep on beating him like this...one, he is getting hurt, two, if it goes to a decision, why hasn't the referee stopped the fight? I don't get why.

"So maybe you shouldn't leave it to the referee. But you are not going to take him out to the face. You are going to take him out to the body. Okay?"
