A BOXER with a lifelong dream of winning a Lonsdale belt is preparing for his second professional fight.

Gary Ormrod will be back in the ring on the VIP Boxing Promotions bill at Oldham Sports Centre on October 5.

The 25-year-old Sutton fighter’s opponent is unknown at this stage.

That is not something that worries Ormrod, a product of the Lowe House St Helens Amateur Boxing Club who turned full-time in April.

The 10st light welterweight only found out the opponent for his first pro fight a week before the contest.

It went well, though, achieving a win on points at the end of four rounds against 38-year-old South African, Bheki Moyo, at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens.

Ormrod, who fought for England twice in an amateur career of more than 40 bouts, is focusing on being in the best possible condition as he builds his career.

“I’m just training as hard as I can, working on my strengths,” said Ormrod, a part-time bar supervisor at the Counting House pub in Hardshaw Street.

Four months into his pro career, he is in his element and has set out his ambitions.

“I absolutely love it,” he said.

“I want to win a Lonsdale belt, a British title,” he said.

“It’s something I’ve always wanted since I was a little child.

“I’ve been told by all my coaches I can achieve it if I work hard, so that’s what I’m doing.”
