GIANTKILLERS Haydock will take on Championship side Oldham in the fourth round of the Challenge Cup.

The Yickers will travel to Bower Fold, Stalybridge on the weekend of March 18/19 aiming to carry on their remarkable run.

The North West Men’s League Champions created history by becoming the first eighth tier team to qualify for this stage of the rugby league’s most prestigious knockout cup.

On Saturday they beat Wests Warriors 28-12 to the earlier scalps of Wath Brow and Thornhill Trojans.

The London team, featuring a smattering of Kiwi players, put pressure on the Haydock line but determined defence from packmen Danny Gee, Carl Cheetham, Adam Brown and Gary Anderton kept them out. Haydock loose forward Rob Sexton opened the scoring on 19 minutes when he stepped at the line and burst through, with Dean Dollin converting.

Wests came fighting back, but the Haydock defence was again first class with the team working overtime pulling off some unbelievable try saving tackles.

Haydock broke out of defence and a great passing movement down the wing saw stand off Jordan Gibson burst through their defence to score a great team. Dollin converted to lead 12-0 after 32 minutes.

Minutes later Haydock went straight back on the attack and scored another great team try with some good inter-passing seeing scrum half Andrew Bacon cut through the Wests defence.

Dollin’s conversion put Haydock in a strong position at 18-0, but Wests came and deep into injury time in the first half they scored to make it 18-6 at half time.

Haydock started the second half well and the ever improving forward Kyle Braithwaite barged over for a vital try, converted by Dollin.

Wests showing some Kiwi determination again hit back strong but found the Haydock’s defence tough to crack, and with both teams now going at it hammer and tongs in a brutal affair.

Wests scored next to make the score 24-12 with 12 minutes to play.

But skipper Jordan Gibson calmly took some heat out of the game by slotting over a penalty, to put them three scores ahead.

A brilliant and memorable all round team performance from the Haydock team, with the Ladbrokes Man Of Match Award going to Dean Dollin, with Jordan Gibson, Connor Smith, Mike and Rob Sexton and the full team running them close.
