THE rugby league community has reacted with shock and sadness to the news St Helens-based referee Chris Leatherbarrow has died.

News of Chris's death emerged on Sunday night and led to an outpouring of tributes on social media from match official colleagues, rugby league players and supporters.

Chris, 27, from Dentons Green, started his career refereeing in the north west counties leagues as a teenager and rose to Super League level.

His sister Rebecca posted her tribute on Facebook. She wrote: "Fly high brother bear,
Your big blue eyes and heart of gold I love you always your soul is gold
Fly high in the sky and I'll be with you soon and care for you sleep tight my world where thinking about you xxxxxxxxx"

Saints issued a statement which read: "Saints are saddened and shocked to hear of the passing away of Chris Leatherbarrow.

"Chris was well known to the club having refereed our matches and been an integral part of the match officials team. He is also from St Helens.

"Our sincerest and heartfelt sympathies are sent to all Chris' family and friends.

"Once again, this is time for the Rugby League family to come together and not only pay tribute but be strong for everyone. We have no doubt it will."

Super League referee Tim Roby wrote on Twitter: "Rest in peace, my old friend and colleague Chris Leatherbarrow. Very fond memories from that Lanzarote camp. My sincere condolences."

Colleague Robert Hicks added:  Gone too early my friend. Thinking of friends, family & especially ur princess Daisy. RIP Chris Leatherbarrow ur fun and smile will b missed."

In a message emailed to members of the RFL community, Nigel Wood said: "It is with great sadness that I can confirm the news of the death of Chris Leatherbarrow.

"As you will all be aware, Chris was a valued member of the Match Official Team who achieved Grade 1 status in 2009 and has since made a significant contribution to the department both on and off the field.

"This is a dreadful tragedy and our thoughts and prayers are with Chris’ family, friends and colleagues at this terrible time."
