PILKINGTON Recs' championship challenge fell at the final hurdle as they were outplayed by Cumbrian rivals Kells 30-18.
Topping the table and on the back of a 13-game winning streak, Recs went into the game as favourites to bring the silverware back to Ruskin Drive.
As it transpired, the Glassmen were just not at the races and seemingly were overawed by the occasion - though they will join Kells at the higher level next season having secured promotion the previous week.
The game was 10 minutes old when Kells opened the scoring with a converted try.
Recs responded quickly, when Jamie Smith forced his way over and Danny Lynch improved.
Slack defending on Recs line allowed Kells to restore their advantage but the deficit was reduced to two points by half time after a fine length-of-the-field try from Ian Stanley.
Ian Stanley's try for Pilks
A blistering opening 15 minutes to the second half from the home side saw the game taken away from Recs, a 20-point lead opening up.
Greg Smith added a length-of-the-field effort before a consolation score from Lynch.
Despite the final day disappointment, Recs can be proud of achieving a third promotion on the run into the top flight of amateur rugby league.
Recs' second string play in their own divisional grand final when they take on Leigh East A at the Select Security Stadium on Saturday at noon.
