RECS have secured promotion to amateur rugby league’s top flight for the first time since 1991- two years ahead of the schedule initially set out for coach Kurt Haggerty.

But they travel up to Cumbrian side Kells on Saturday looking to complete the job and go up as champions.

Recs sealed promotion with a 50-16 drubbing of Ince Rose Bridge to climb into the National Conference Premier Division, swapping places with relegated Thatto Heath.

Pilkington Recs coach Kurt Haggerty said: “It was a goal at the start of the season to get promoted and win the league.

“We have done the one, but the league would be the cherry on top.

“I spoke to the committee when I took over as head coach and they gave me a five-year plan to get to the top. We have done it in three seasons and so that is a massive achievement for us.”

Recs and Kells are level on points with an identical playing record this season so Saturday’s game will be on a knife-edge.

The last round could not have been planned any better.

“We knew at the start of the year that it could come down to the last game if the sides stayed consistent all year - and it has,” Haggerty said.

“It is not a great field to play on, like the one we used to at Ruskin, but we will make it our own pitch for 80 minutes and turn it around and beat them.”

Recs bounce into the game after their half century drubbing of the Wiganers.

Once again it was a quick start that set the tone.

With only two minutes in the clock, Recs wing Andrew Nisbet dived over in the corner after good build up play by Greg Smith and Ian Stanley.

Recs continued to build their momentum with a try from the resulting kick-off, with Greg Smith jinking his way past four defenders on his way to the line.

A brace of quick-fire tries, firstly by Jamie Smith and then Knapper handed Recs a comfortable 22-point lead with less than 20 minutes played.

Further tries came from Nisbet - a length of the field effort, Paul Leyland’s first try of the season.

The Wiganers scored twice after the break.

The Glassmen replied instantly with Knapper scoring his second, Jono Peers and Ryan Liptrot

The visitors had the final say of the afternoon, scoring wide on the right, however it was not enough to dampen the celebrations at final whistle.

The Amdec MOM was Jamie Smith.
