A drop goal five minutes from time settled an enthralling fixture in Hull.

But it was the Recs who were yet again guilty of letting their opposition snatch a result away from them in the dying minutes.

Missing some key personnel, the visitors could be forgiven for failing to come away with a victory, but in reality they did enough to earn two vital points on the road, only to see their lack of ability to close out games come to haunt them once more.

The home side started the strongest, making forays into Recs territory with smart plays down their own touchline.

However, excellent cover defence by Andrew Nisbet helped to keep the game scoreless. It was eventually Recs that broke the deadlock on the half-hour mark after a flick pass by Ian Stanley sent Nisbet racing away.

He raced 60 meters before being hauled down by the full-back, only to see the impressive Jamie Smith power over from close range on the next tackle. Danny Lynch converted.

Recs were over minutes later when young prop Jon Key charged onto a short pass and wriggled out of the tackle enough to stretch an arm out and score.

Lynch’s conversion gave a 12-0 half-time lead

Skirlaugh started the second half with intent and following mistakes at the play the ball by Recs, they were handed possession in striking distance of the Recs line.

Strong defence looked to have held to have held the home side out, but a grubber kick ricocheted off three players before bouncing gleefully into the arms of the centre, who had the simple job of touching down, for a try that was converted.

Recs started to get a foothold of the game, but as they pushed for that decisive score, a long pass to Stanley was intercepted by the scrum-half who raced 80 metres to the line, just warding off the challenge from the chasing Andy Knapper. The conversion levelled the scores with 20 minutes to play.

Both side began to push for the next score.

Recs coming close following a Josh Lynch break and the home side thwarted by a last-ditch tackle from Knapper.

With the clock ticking down, Lynch had a drop-goal attempt charged down, to then see the home side charge up-field and convert a one-pointer of their own with five minutes to play.

A frantic final five minutes ensued, but to no avail for Recs, who will need to resolve their woes on the road if they are to achieve their target of promotion.
