PROMOTED Recs started their season with a bang, sweeping aside last season’s fourth placed finishers.

The visitors started the brightest, and following a sustained spell of pressure, scored beneath the posts for a converted try.

Recs were forced to dig deep in defence before in the first 15 minutes before scoring a try in their first attacking opportunity of the game.

A moment of magic by Danny Lynch saw him attack the short side before chipping over the defensive line and collecting the ball and feeding winger, Andrew Knapper, who had the presence of mind to offload inside to skipper Mark Ashton who scored to the right of the posts.

From the kick-off, Jamie Smith broke from his own half before feeding Ryan Hilliard who kept the ball alive under the cover tackle, to find Greg Smith who in turn fired the ball out wide to the wing for Knapper to step inside the chasing winger and score in the corner.

Five minutes later, good build up work by Ben Gravener, put Recs on the opposition line and Liam Bostock charged over from dummy-half to score what is now a trademark try.

Lynch converted Shaw Cross responded, when a poor kick-chase allowed the full-back to race 40 metres up-field, setting the field position for their tricky half-back to create space and provide a short pass to the charging second rower who raced over from 20 metres out.

The converted try made the scores 14-12.

With half-time approaching, Recs had one more attacking chance and with their powerful pack making good inroads into the opposition territory, it was Lynch who again became creator, darting down the short side and starting a wonderful passing movement that saw the ball go through five pairs of hands to be touched down by Ashton.

Lynch converted and the half time score was 20-12 With a strong wind behind them, Recs looked confident starting the second half, and it took only two minutes for the to get on the score sheet.

Greg Smith scooped up a loose ball to break 30 metres, and following a quick play-the-ball, Ryan Hilliard attacked the line before throwing a long pass to wingman Danny Filson who, despite an earlier injury, hobbled his way to the line. Lynch converted.

Recs were now looking to kill the game off and the decisive blow game courtesy of Ian Stanley who fielded a high kick in his own half and then broke to race 60 metres to the line.

Lynch converted.

With the game all but sewn up, Recs game looked more relaxed and they began to play with more fluency.

With some last ditch defending from the Sharks holding Recs out, it was only a matter of time before they were over again with John Rees opening his account for the season, charging onto a short Greg Smith ball and the fellow second rower, Mark Briody breaking from half way to sell an audacious dummy, fooling the full back, and scoring beneath the posts.

Lynch converted both.

There was still time for Recs to attack, but a stray pass from Rees saw a score go begging and then a brilliant cover tackle on Ashton hauled him down inches short of the line to leave the final score 44-12.

Coach Kurt Haggerty must be pleased with his troops first outing in Division 1 as they set out n their goal of reaching the top level of amateur rugby league.

Danny Lynch was the Amdec Man of the Match with debutant Paul Leyland taking the Bold Tyre Centre award.
