Disappointing week for St Helens Town

Congleton Town 2-0 St Helens Town, St Helens Town 0-5 Stockport Sports.

It was a disappointing week for St Helens Town as they fell to consecutive defeats but in very different manners.

The midweek trip to Congleton saw St Helens look good going forward without worrying the home goalkeeper too much but get caught on the break twice during the second period. The first goal came after the visitors’ best spell at the start of the second period and despite a looking offside in the move Smith fired home. Mawdsley beat Conkie but his effort thundered off the post and was cleared before another counter attack saw the visitors concede a penalty for hand ball in a penalty box melee which Smith stepped up to double Congleton’s lead.

In the closing stages St Helens created chances but Edwards, Osman and Rimmer were all thwarted by Conkie and they returned to Merseyside empty handed.

Saturday saw Town well beaten by their affluent visitors Stockport Sports who got off to a good start as they found themselves three goals to the good after half an hour as Marsden, Mullineux and Mehmet all notched.

Town had chances in between the goals as Judge and Rudd were both denied by Saunders in the visitors goal and in the second half the visitors added another brace first though Garnder before Marsden netted his second from the spot to make it a miserable week for St Helens Town.

Town’s next scheduled match is an FA Vase 2nd Qualifying Round visit to Daisy Hill on Saturday 15th September with a 3pm kick off.
