Cyclist Ed Clancy wins bronze medal in omnium event at London Olympic velodrome
7:34pm Sunday 5th August 2012 in Sport
NEWTON-based cyclist Ed Clancy has won a bronze medal to add to the gold he picked up on Friday.
Clancy put in a storming performance to win the 1k time trial final leg of the multi-event omnium at the London velodrome in a astonishing 1 minute 98 seconds. He flew round the track to post a time that would have been good enough to win the world individual title in this discipline a few years ago.
But his chances of gaining another gold in the omnium had evaporated earlier with a couple of 'down the field' finishes in his weaker elements including the points and elimination races.
Speaking on the BBC after hearing he had moved back up into third place, Clancy said that he had not been able to match some of the omnium specialists in the bunch racing and that his main target had always been the team pursuit.
His gold medal in the pursuit in world record time doubled up the gold medal he had won in Beijing when Bradley Wiggins also rode in the winning pursuit squad with Clancy.

They train long hours, mostly on their own. Most earn very little money from sport and genuinely do it for the glory. They always talk about the team (GB), always thank their coaches and parents when interviewed and all of them are sincerely grateful to the fans.
I hope that more people are encouraged to participate and watch some of these minority sports instead of lining the pockets of vastly overpaid primma donna's.
Listening to them speak about training should also make a few kids realise that hard work is usually needed to reach the top in sport and work and not just standing in the queue at X Factor for a couple of hours.
Well done to Ed and all of his team mates, it's been great watching over the last few days.
