Third Newton win on the trot

NEWTON registered their third win on the trot and in doing so moved up to third position in the table.

The visitors won the toss and elected to bat first on a good wicket and added 31 runs before losing their first wicket to Mike Walkden, who bowled unchanged from the Queens Drive end and finished with an excellent return of 6 for 52 off 23 overs as Liverpool were dismissed for 149.

Dominic Chambers gave excellent support as he took 3 for 10 off his 7 overs and Barlow weighed in with 1 for 13 off 1.3 overs In reply Newton lost Scott for 0 but then David Fearnley with 16 and Steve Appleton with his now almost obligatory 30 runs took Newton to 74 for 4.

Chris Chambers added 21 before being run out and so it was left to John Humphreys 28 not out and Wilkie 17 not out to take Newton to their comfortable 5 wicket win and 25 valuable points.

The second XI game at Liverpool, played on a sub-standard out ground that had no covers, frittered out into a meaningless draw with both sides taking 5 points.

Batting first the home side declared on 178 for 9 after 57 overs.

Newton had reached only 29 for 5 off 21 overs when the rain ended it.
