Saints first teamers to get a run out against Oldham

Nathan Ashe is expected to line up for Saints. Nathan Ashe is expected to line up for Saints.

SAINTS will use Friday’s friendly at Oldham to give another run out to those players who missed a big chunk of last term with injury.

Although largely made up of younger players, Ade Gardner, Josh Perry, Chris Flannery, Shaun Magennis and Nathan Ashe will take to the field against the Roughyeds at Whitebank Stadium.

They join the likes of Carl Forster, Scott Hale, Danny Jones, Josh Jones, Jordan Hand and Oldhamer Joe Greenwood in the friendly.

Greenwood, 18, signed from Saddleworth Rangers and is a prop forward.

He trained with the first team squad in 2011 and was ‘18th' man on a number of occasions so will be relishing his chance against his hometown club.

The rest of the squad will be made up of players who train with the first team squad and Academy starlets.

Admission prices are £10 adults, £8 concessions and £2 under 16s with a £2 transfer charge to the seats which will be sold on a first come first served basis.

The game will kick off at 8pm.

SAINTS and England hooker James Roby will be the club’s vice-captain for the coming season.

He will also lead the side out in skipper Paul Wellens’ absence, who sat out the friendly with Widnes after undergoing an off-season operation on his foot.

Roby has matured into one of the team’s leaders since making his debut in 2004 and was a virtual ever present last term.

The regular 80-minute man missed just one match last term– the final one of the regular season – before playing a starring role in Saints’ play-off campaign.

Coach Royce Simmons said: “Last year you saw when both Wello and Jammer were off, Robes mostly looked after it.

“Jon Wilkin would certainly do a good job there - they are the first two blokes you look at.

“It is one good thing about the club - there are plenty of leaders.”
