Wet ball scuppers Rainford’s hopes

RAINFORD’S clash with second placed Sefton Park ended in a farce last Saturday when the game was abandoned because the ball was deemed to be too wet and play could not continue.

The rain had stopped and the pitch was fit for play as a sizeable crowd watched in disbelief as a game, which had promised so much and was evenly poised with 10 overs left, was declared a ‘no result’. At a time when cricket is seeking a wider appeal and greater sponsorship this sort of incident does nothing to promote the sport.

For the record Sefton Park scored 202 for 9 declared before Rainford were in the process of replying with 164 for 5, Mark Brook top scoring with 48, before the game came to an abrupt halt. Rainford’s second eleven lost by five wickets at Rainhill after being bowled out for 201, with top scores from Matt Bailey (50), Matt Campbell (40), David Christian (35) and Andrew Harrison (43).

P. Morris (6 for 61 off 20) It was never enough as D. Carr rattled up 118 for the home side off just 78 balls and he was ably supported by Hayes (22no) and Yate (21).

Phil Curran bagging three wickets for the visitors.
