Ahmed’s the all round star

ST Helens won the toss at Rainhill and surprisingly decided to bat first when the game could have been interrupted by rain.

The Rainhill attack used the damp environment to make it difficult for the St Helens batsmen.

At 14 for 2, Saints were in trouble but a much needed partnership of 103 between Supria (57) and Lovell (57) steadied the ship.

At 117 for 3 St Helens were poised to make a big score but it failed to materialise.

Some good catching coupled with some poor batting decisions meant that St Helens lost their last seven wickets for just 29 runs and were all out for 146. Ahmed 4 for 45 off 17, Williams 3 for 19 off 7 and part time bowler Rotheram claiming 3 for 19 off 9. Rainhill had to bat before tea and survived the initial onslaught.

After a break for rain and then tea, the Rainhill batsmen returned to the crease. At 39 without loss Rainhill were favourites but Saints kept the pressure on.

A couple of wickets meant the game at 55 for 2 was evenly poised. After Morris (46) was out at 78 for 4, St Helens were favourites but there was to be no similar collapse.

Ahmed (36 not out) and Rotheram (26not out) saw Rainhill home with a 69 run unbeaten partnership.

Rainhill passed the St Helens total for the loss of four wickets. Kenny returned figures of 2 for 34 off 12. Moorfield 2nd vs Rainhill 2nd.

Rainhill were all out for a poor total of 58 in only 18 overs. Moorfield passed the Rainhill total in 14 overs for the loss of only 3 wickets. Jefferies finished with 2 for 27.
