SAINTS scrum-half Matty Smith has joined Widnes on loan.
The 20-year-old, who has recently recovered from a broken arm, initially joins the Vikings for a month, but the loan could be extended until the end of the season.
Widnes say Smith - who is contracted to Saints until the end of 2009 season - has been a target since the start of the season following his displays last season when he deputised for the injured Sean Long in the play-offs.
Vikings' sporting director Terry O'Connor said:" Matty is an outstanding talent who will be an invaluable member of the squad.
"He guided St Helens last year to the Grand Final but was unfortunate to miss out in selection for Old Trafford.
"St Helens see Matty as a long-term replacement for Sean Long and the opportunity for him to play in the Co-operative National League will ensure he is operating at the top of his game should the need arise for him to return to the GPW Recruitment Stadium (Knowsley Road)."
"The most important thing is that Matty comes in and wants to play and we're delighted to be able to give him the opportunity which will benefit both parties."
