FORMER Saints centre Mal Meninga has been inducted as a rugby league Immortal by the NRL.

Meninga, who starred for Saints in the 1984-85 season, is one of five legends inducted today with pre-war greats Dally Messenger, Frank Burge and Dave Brown named first.

They were followed by Norm Provan with Meninga becoming the 13th Immortal.

The big Queenslander Meninga first emerged on the Invincibles 1982 tour to Britain.

He remains the only player in history to be selected for four Kangaroo tours -1982, 1986, 1990 and 1994.

During his guest spell at Saints he helped the club to their first trophies in seven years, scoring twice in the Lancashire Cup Final win over Wigan and grabbing a brace in the Premiership win over Hull KR.

A legend at Canberra Raiders, Meninga went on to coach Queensland and is currently the Australian national coach.

He still returns to Saints occasionally – where he says he is "embarrassed" by the warmth of the greeting he still receives and was a guest at this year’s Good Friday win over Wigan.

The latest selections join the illustrious list of the eight existing Immortals Clive Churchill, Bob Fulton, Reg Gasnier, Johnny Raper, Graeme Langlands, Wally Lewis, Arthur Beetson and Andrew Johns.
