SAINTS boss Justin Holbrook paid tribute to young match-winner Danny Richardson after a hard-fought 14-12 win over Warrington.

Richardson slotted the winning penalty goal after the final hooter to take the spoils.

Holbrook said: “Longy (Sean Long) had a lot of confidence in Danny.

"Tommy Makinson kicks the ball a long way, and I asked should we get him to kick it, but Longy said Danny would kick it and he did. It was a great kick.

“He is a great young kid. To be able to step up and kick that at the end of the game is fantastic.

"He is everything you want in a young player – you want them to back themselves.

"It was great to see. It’s good for our comp and our team to see youngsters step up with the confidence to win games.”

Saints had trailed 8-0 and 12-6 before drawing level on 64 minutes to set up the shoot-out.

“I am really happy to win that game. Warrington are a good side, are well organised and well coached," Holbrook said.

“They came with a certain style of play that was allowed for the whole game and it was hard to watch. So to win that, was full credit to our players to hang on and find a way to win that was fantastic."

On the way his side had to battle back in the second half, Holbrook added: “We had a big start to the second half and it was important to take the chance as we knew there wouldn’t be that many opportunities in that type of games.

“We came into it in the last 10 of the first half we worked out how it was going to be played out and did something about it.

"I thought Louie McCarthy was outstanding in that spell. Theo Fages did the same in the second half.

“Jonny Lomax was fantastic again too."

“We knew it would be hard, but it was an important win for us.”
