TRIBUTES have flooded in following the death of popular former Saints player Roy Haggerty at the weekend.

Haggerty, who made 363 appearances in 12 seasons in for the club between 1979 and 1991, was just 58.

And his passing has drawn tributes from across rugby league and the world of sport.

On Twitter, former Saints teammate Alan Hunte tweeted: "Just heard about the passing of Roy Haggerty. So sad to lose an old team mate way too soon.

"Was a privilege to pull on the red V with this guy. No more tougher competitor and was Saints through and through. Glad you were on my side!! RIP Roy".

St Helens-born broadcaster Stuart Pyke said: "Sad news. #RugbyLeague fans of an older generation will remember Roy Haggerty, who has sadly died. He ran through walls for his hometown club St Helens."

Meanwhile,

Businessman Andrew Mikhail said: "Grew up as a kid with this fella one of my heroes! So sad to hear he’s gone today. RIP #RoyHaggerty"

Players he toured Australia with in 1988 also added their tributes.

Centre Garry Schofield said: "Rest in peace Roy Haggerty. What a great character!"

While Martin Offiah wrote: "R.I.P my ex-GB teammate Roy Haggerty."

Meanwhile, St Helens boxer Martin Murray added simply: "RIP Roy Haggerty #StHelensLegend".

Former Salford player Andy Burgess said: "So sad to hear the news that Roy Haggerty has passed away- super tough competitor and played way above his weight- RIP Roy."

Haggerty was a popular terrace legend and supporters tributes have come thick and fast.

Jonny Lee added: "Every rugby league team has local players who would have played for nothing and run through a brick wall for their club, this legend was one R. I. P. Roy Haggerty, can't believe the news."

Jimmy McBride: "If you ever had the pleasure of being in the company of Roy Haggerty you’d not need telling how infectious a personality he was #RIP Roy & thanks for the memories."

And nephew John Haggerty posted: "Not just my uncle but someone I looked up to growing up and idolised. I’ll never forget you Roy. RIP big man love you."
