SAINTS boss Justin Holbrook was left with a tough selection headache ahead of Friday’s trip to Huddersfield (7.45pm) - but that is good news.

Australian centre Ryan Morgan, who missed the trip to France after sustaining a fractured nose in the opening game, was cleared to play but has been left out of the 19.

In Morgan's absence in France the partnership of Adam Swift on the wing and Tommy Makinson in the centres, did a commendable job.

Swift, who scored a smartly taken try, took several line-clearing carries and was unflappable under a series of testing high balls, made the most of his first appearance in the senior team since last June.

Makinson, too, slotted into the centre berth with aplomb, meaning Morgan will have a job trying to force his way into the line-up.

Holbrook said: “Ryan Morgan is fit and has been cleared to play.

“But it will be a tough decision there because I was really happy with the way Swifty played and Tommy Makinson handled the centres really well.

“So that will be a tough one.

“It is the hardest part as a coach to leave quality players out, but you need to be in that position to send out a strong side every week.”

That is a nice problem to have - in a number of positions - much better than the scrambling around for players and the slotting in of square pegs that has happened frequently this decade.

Some of that is down to the strength in depth of the squad - and some good fortune with injury.

The flip side is Holbrook will have to manage those players - even senior ones - who are left on the sidelines, desperate for a start.

“It is hard to leave anyone out – young or old.

“Whether it is the young ones who are itching to get a game or the senior guys who have been there and done it; no matter who you leave out it is tough.

“But we have a good group here and they have not let them have it affect them in training and we need that to continue,” Holbrook said.

There will be one enforced change in the squad for the game at Huddersfield, with Welsh World Cup loose forward Morgan Knowles beginning his four match suspension for his Grade E dangerous throw against Catalans.

In his place the 13 role will be rotated between Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook and Jon Wilkin.

It will mean that Kyle Amor, who missed out in France, will return in the front row. Front rower Matty Lees has been called into the 19.
