PRESCOT Cables twice came from behind to defeat Colne in a five goal thriller in a game played in bitterly cold conditions at Volair Park.

Cables Manager Brian Richardson made two changes from the team which had lost narrowly at Brighouse the previous week, Bram Johnstone and Ben Cartwright replacing Valter Fernandes and James McCulloch.

Ossett kicked off playing towards the Hope Street End.

However, it was Cables who asserted the early pressure, Edgar and Dean linking up down the left side to force the Colne defence to concede a corner in the first minute.

From the corner taken by Edgar, Wynn played the ball to Dean whose effort from close range was cleared off the goal line.

Cables were not letting up on the Colne defence, and on 8 minutes Wynn created an opportunity fro James Edgar whose shot was saved by Aghayere.

On 13 minutes Lloyd Dean set up Dominic Marie on the edge of the penalty area whose blistering drive was tipped over the bar by Colne keeper Aghayare.

The corner taken by Edgar was headed clear at the far post by a Colne defender.

After surviving this spell of intense pressure from Cables, Colne took the lead on 16 minutes when Phil Dean’s dipping cross from the left deceived Cables keeper Marcus Burgess and nestled inside the far post. On 22 minutes Dean almost doubled Colne’s advantage when he nicked the ball past Burgess only for James Doyle to clear off the goal line for Cables. Colne were now in the ascendancy, and on 24 minutes a free kick taken by Morrison on the left was headed over by Wood. Philo Dean went close for Colne again on 32 minutes when a cross field ball form Anderson put him clear and his shot went just wide of the far post.

On 34 minutes, Alex Coleman was shown a yellow card for a foul on Lloyd Dean. As half time approached both sides were throwing caution to the wind and on 38 minutes, a cross by Wood from the right was headed just wide of the far post by Dean. A minute later and Aghayere on loan from Burnley showed his premier league class with another fine save from Edgar.

Cable began the second half in determined fashion laying siege to the Colne goal, Edgar having a shot saved by Aghayare and it was no surprise when they equalised on 56 minutes. From a free kick taken by Edgar Dominic Marie’s header was fumbled by Aghayare and the ball dropped over the goal line to put Cables level. Colne forced a corner from which Chris Anderson fired over the Cables cross bar. Edgar crossed the ball into the Colne penalty are where Marie controlled the ball on his chest laying it off for Lloyd Dean whose shot was blocked.

On 63 minutes Colne regained the lead when Phil Dean played the ball into the Cables penalty area to release Oliver Wood who scored at the second attempt after Marcus Burgess blocked his first shot. Cables responded quickly and Dale Wright produced a peach of a ball to the far post where Lloyd Dean headed the ball powerfully past Aghayere to put Cables level on 65 minutes.

There was a flurry of goal mouth activity from both sides, Phil Dean firing over the cross bar for Colne and then Dominic Marie and Lloyd Dean having shots saved by Aghayre.

On 70 minutes Colne made their first change, Connor Gaul replacing Chris Anderson. However it was Cables who took the lead on 74 minutes when Dominic Marie’s shot from the edge of the box was deflected into the corner of the net by Chris Almond. Cables made a double substitution on 78 minutes, Dominic Reid and Harry Cain replacing Dominic Marie and Chris Almond who had both had fine games as Cables looked to consolidate their lead.

Cain’s impact on the game was immediate laying off the ball to Dean who fired wide, and then firing wide of the far post himself.

Joe Herbert then played a long ball out of defence to put Cain clear through the Colne defence only for Aghayere to make another fine save.

Dale Wright was sent off on 84 minutes after being shown a second yellow card and there were three minutes of added time, but Cables hung on to take three much needed points.
