A RECORD crowd of more than 500 at King George’s playing fields witnessed Haydock’s Ladbrokes Challenge Cup giant killing run continue, with a fine win against National Conference and BARLA National Cup holders Thornhill Trojans.

As expected early exchanges were fierce with Gary Anderton, Adam Brown and Scott Johnson working overtime in defence.

The Yickers were first to score with a brilliant try fit for the occasion, when a break was made from their own half by Darrell Rotherham and great support play from Ste Jones, Andrew Bacon and Danny Lee saw the supporting NW Lionheart Danny Gee go under the sticks with tour partner Jordan Gibson adding the extras.

Although Thornhill hit back with a try on 10 minutes ex- St Helens junior Connor Smith was next on the score sheet for Haydock, with Gibson again adding on the extras to make it 12-4.

Two tries from the Dewsbury outfit saw the Yickers trail 16-12, but Dean Dollin's converted try restored Haydock's lead.

The Yickers cranked it up another gear with two quick-fire tries from wingman Alex James and Darrell Rotherham to make it 26-16 at the break.

The second half was very much a defensive battle but Thornhill cut the deficit to six points with a try.

However, Gee rounded off another fine team try to see Haydock progress to the Challenge Cup for only the third time in the club's 39-year history.

Connor Smith took the Porterhouse Properties Man of the Match award, with Dean Dollin, Jordan Gibson and Danny Gee all in contention.

The third round draw takes place on Tuesday at 7pm.
