SAINTS take on Leeds Rhinos tonight, which gives us the opportunity to look back at one of the memorable encounters between the two sides.

On April 14 2002 the two sides locked horns in the Challenge Cup semi final at Wigan – a week after Saints had edged the league game at Knowsley Road.

The semi-final saw Saints produce, what Shaun Edwards described in a national newspaper as the finest display of rugby he had seen.

Saints pack, with Chris Joynt, Darren Britt, Peter Shiels, Keiron Cunningham and Paul Sculthorpe to the fore, laid a great platform for a lesson in passing, offloading and support play leading to hat-tricks for both wings Darren Albert and Tony Stewart.

Sculthorpe and Cunningham added Saints’ other tries, with Sean Long booting five goals in the 42-16 win in front of 17,475 spectators.

With the final at Murrayfield less than a fortnight Saints looked invincible – but they came a cropper five days later after sending an A team to Bradford.

And the subsequent furore meant Saints were a little distracted when they went up to Scotland for the Challenge Cup final where they lost to Wigan.
