DAVE Chisnall missed out on a second Players’ Championship win of the year when he lost to Benito van de Pas in Saturday’s final.

However the St Helens ace, beaten 6-1 by the Dutchman, still moved up to sixth on the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) Order of Merit after banking £6,000 in prize money.

The 36-year-old continued his strong form during October, which has also seen him reach the last four at the World Grand Prix and the German Darts Championships, by sweeping past Tony Newell (6-2), Scott Dale (6-2) and Ronnie Baxter (6-1) in the early rounds before overcoming Steve West (6-4), James Wilson (6-2) and Daryl Gurney (6-4) to reach the final.

Both Chisnall, in the third round, and fellow St Helener Stephen Bunting - at the quarter-finals stage - were eliminated by eventual runner-up Chris Dobey during the previous day’s edition.

Bunting had claimed the scalps of Terry Temple (6-2), Brett Claydon (6-5), Cristo Reyes (6-4) and Dutch ace Vincent van der Voort (6-4) to reach the last eight in Barnsley.

Michael Smith endured a weekend to forget, falling to Mark Walsh (6-1) in Friday’s first round before crashing out at the same stage 24 hours later after being whitewashed by Ken MacNeil.

However the former Premier League star can take solace from receiving an invitation to play at next month’s World Series of Darts finals in Glasgow.
