IT was a busy week for Rainford Tennis Club as the Mixed 1st Team were victorious in the final of the Southport League College Cup.

The Green Army have been competing in the Southport Tennis League for the first time and are currently top of their division but made history by lifting the club’s first knock-out team trophy in their 41 year history.

The final took place at Campion Tennis Club where Rainford overcame Birkdale having beaten Ormskirk, Mawdesley and Formby Holy Trinity in the previous rounds.

The team from the final was Paul Porter, Simon Webster, Dave Hillier, Vicki Cawley, Maisie Lavelle, Sonia Thomas, Mal Thomas and Laura Hart.

“I am delighted to have secured silverware in our first season in the Southport Tennis League,” said captain, Mal Thomas.

“We have won many leagues over the years but this is our first victory in a final.”

There was also singles success for the Club at the 2016 Liverpool Parks Tennis Tournament as Cameron Ashley-Jones won the 18 & Under Boys Singles title.

The competition took place on the outdoor courts at Liverpool Tennis Centre and also saw Phoebe Mitchell reach the final of the 12 & Under Girls Singles.
