MEMORIES of their dismal Magic defeat by Huddersfield Giants should be at the forefront of Saints’ mind this week ahead of Sunday’s trip to Yorkshire.

Saints were humiliated 48-20 at St James’ Park by a side that, although still bursting with talent, has not been out of the bottom four all year.

Giants have a new boss taking the reins in former Newcastle Knights coach Rick Stone, but they are now playing for nothing in their remaining two league games as they prepare for survival in the Middle 8s.

But Saints coach Keiron Cunningham, whose side is absolutely scrapping for every point now, sees danger in the Giants.

He said: “Huddersfield are a good side. There are lots of ups and downs in their game but they have pulled off some great victories, especially in the last few weeks.

“They are playing a brand of carefree rugby – they understand where they are going to be and where they are heading.

“Their new coach comes in this week for our game and that will change the landscape again.

“It’s always tough at Huddersfield. They have got some good players and they are fit at the minute, although they might just be missing Joe Wardle.”

Cunningham will have players back for the trip to the John Smith’s Stadium with wingman Adam Swift back after his mandatory spell on the sidelines with concussion.

There could be changes at half back too, with Luke Walsh set to play for the first time since the end of May.

“We are hopeful on Luke – he has trained this week and we have a good long week ahead of us.

Definitely have Swifty back and hopefully Walsh and we seem to have come through Widnes ok.”

Although Jordan Turner and Jon Wilkin have been going well in the halves, Walsh’s kicking game has been vital at Huddersfield in the past.

And for all their troubles this year the Giants are still, on paper, a very good set with a big wing in Jermaine McGillvary who can start and finish sets, guile at half in Danny Brough and grunt up front.

But Saints’ urgency to catch Catalans should trump the Giants’ desire to avoid the wooden spoon.

And Saints have that small matter of revenge from Tyneside.

Cunningham added: “I am sure that game will be resonating in the back of my players’ minds when they take the field at Huddersfield.

“I said a few weeks ago, it ain’t over till the fat lady sings. It is far from over, but far from us making the four, it is far from Catalans doing anything.

“We have have just got to worry about this week and then the week after at Wigan and then we have another seven games to do something.

“As long as we are there or thereabouts when the breakaway comes we can have a good crack at those just above us.

“We play Wigan the week before their cup semi final and that could be good for us.

“I said to my players if you have any ambition of doing anything at this club this year then every week is a Grand Final.”
