AT the weekend 26 athletes travelled to Bebington to represent St Helens Schools at the County Schools Athletic Championships.

There were some exceptional performances on the day.

In the Inter girls competition Laura Fairclough from Rainhill High took first place in the hammer and second in the shot putt.

Rainford High’s Megan Lang also took second place in the triple jump. De La Salle’s Jorden Pilkington competed in the high jump and finished fourth and knocked seconds off her pb in her first 300m of the season with a time of 46.8sec.

Codi Wills also from De La Salle ran a very strong 200m in a time of 28.9 to finish fourth in her heat.

Jessica Leonard, Rainford Sixth Form, took second place in the 400m, one of the last events of the day, in a time of 59 seconds.

Beth Laidlow, also from Rainford, took first place in the junior girls 100m in a time of 12.7 seconds.

Rainford also had a strong year 7 representation of Kaitlin Naylor, Elizabeth Greenall, Holly Scott and Celline Virton. Kaitlin competed in the long jump and finished fifth in her 100m heat.

Elizabeth took gold in the 75m hurdles and jumped 3.99m in the long jump to finish third. Holly came second in the 75m and Celine fifth. Celine also took silver in the javelin and bronze in the shot.

In the same year group De La Salle’s Cameron McBride and Lauren Taylor both ran very well in the 75m and Lauren also took third place in the 150m.

St Helens also had some primary school athletes: Hollie Brussels from St Teresas, Sutton, ran in the 1200m alongside Kayley Letts, from Oakdene, both ran exceptionally well against year 7s. Oakdene’s Tegan Sidebottom competed in the long jump finishing third and sixth in the 75m and Lucy Strettle came sixth in the shot putt and fourth in the javelin.

St Helens boys team also won medals on the day. Michael Farr from Sutton Academy smashed both pbs in the 200m in a time of 24.4 taking gold and took silver in the 300m in 39.5 secs. In the same 300m James Mooney from Tower College finished fourth in a time of 41.1.

Michael Fairclough, Rainhill year 9 threw shot finishing fourth and finished third in the javelin.

His team mate, Charlie Roberts, also from Rainhill finished fourth in the 800m.

De La Salle were represented by Liam Sharples, year 7 in the 100m finishing fifth, Michael Brussels, year 8, in the 1500m finishing fourth and Jorden Benson, year 9 in the 100m taking silver.

In the primary schools competition Oakdene’s Alex Strettle took first place in the long jump and third place in the soft javelin. Luka Sidebottom ran the 100 and 200m and Sam Owen finished sixth in the 75m sprint.
