Rugby League is loved, played and passionately supported in all corners of the globe, and this weekend marks the 120th anniversary of the sport.

Since its humble beginnings in 1895, Rugby League has evolved and developed into one of the UK’s most loved sports.

To mark the occasion, three current day First Utility Super League stars Kevin Sinfield, Matty Smith and Jon Wilkin have turned back the clocks with title sponsors, First Utility, to give fans a glimpse of the style of the Rugby League legends of yesteryear.

Jon Wilkin, St Helens Forward and former England International, said: “Happy Birthday Rugby League! I’m not sure about the beard on me, but now I’ve started wearing very colourful boots, I probably need something to take the edge off - I feel the old-fashioned beard makes me look a bit more intimidating!

“The sport’s obviously come a long way since its formal beginning in 1895, but one thing that doesn’t seem to wane is the passion and love of the supporters.

"It’s important to remember that without the fans, Rugby League had no chance to grow into the sport it is today.

"They’re some of the most passionate supporters in all of sports and I’m sure that the Saints and the First Utility Super League will still have a loyal following in another 120 years!”

Matty Smith, Wigan Warriors’ half back, said: “It’s a momentous milestone for our sport this week and playing for a side like Wigan, you really get to appreciate the heritage of Rugby League, so it’s important to recognise occasions like this one.

"These days, I’m not sure our nutritionist would let me get away with smoking a pipe, but I like the old-school lace-up shirts, I’ll be having a word with the kit man to see if he can knock me one up!

“This club’s had so many great players and Rugby League legends, hopefully this set of lads can help continue Wigan’s winning ways in the First Utility Super League this season, and create a new set of club legends, making the next 120 years even more successful for the club.”
