THERE will be no shortage of hunger when Saints tackle Widnes Vikings in Sunday’s Challenge Cup quarter final at Langtree Park (4pm).

Saints have not been to Wembley since their 2008 triumph and only skipper Jon Wilkin and James Roby out of the current squad have played in the cup final.

Prop Kyle Amor has a burning ambition to back up last year’s Grand Final success with a Challenge Cup win, but knows that Widnes will present a difficult hurdle en route.

The Cumbrian prop said: “Sunday is knockout rugby and we desperately want to get through. I’d love nothing more than to play at the national stadium.

“Your goal as a player is to play at the biggest venues you can, so this comp gives a chance to do that.

“There are going to be 17 players in a Widnes jersey who want to have their say. We have got to play really well and get ready to play a tough, physical side who can throw the ball about and play some good rugby.

“Vikings are a team that work hard for each other and when you have got Kev Brown orchestrating it all they are going to be tough.

“But with what happened last week at Cas we have really got to focus on ourselves and bring what we know we can bring to the party and that will hopefully put us in the draw for the semi.

“We have got to pay Widnes a lot of respect which is probably what we didn’t do against Cas.

“We have to go to go toe-to-toe with them and see if they can go with us.”

Having won the cup regularly in the noughties – 2001, 04, 06, 07, 08 the six year break seems an eternity for Saints and their fans.

And Amor says that is something the club is aiming to rectify.

“2008 was a long time ago – I was still working in my crisp packet factory then so that tells you how long ago that was.

“I saw what it meant to town getting to the Grand Final and winning it, it would be nice to give the fans that special day out, and for players write our names down,” he said.
