ALTHOUGH Saints lost their World Club Challenge clash against South Sydney Rabbitohs 39-0 to burst thebubble of anticipation that had been building since last October, the evening still provided some talking points.
And in years to come - after the disappointment has faded - fans will look back on the day Russell Crowe and his Rabbitohs came to town.
Saints centre Mark Percival twice got over the tryline but was denied by the video referee, at the other end the dominant Australians had all the luck and every bounce of the ball.
Bernard Platt captured the evening's proceedings.
1. Russell Crowe was at the centre of the media scrum ahead of ther game. The actor's presence did allow interest in the game to reach a much wider audience.
2. Saints were led out to massive applause by courageous 12-year-old Harrison Ledsham.
3. A great day for the representatives of St Helens community clubs.
4. Saints prop Mose Masoe charges in to some thick traffic.
5. Joe Greenwood stood up well to the physical test.
6. Alex Walmsley feels the force of the Rabbitohs defence.
7. Another big collision.
8. Try time for Greg Inglis.
9. In tribute to former Souths Sam Burgess, who was serenaded with cries of Swing Low Sweet Chariot from the West Stand, Saints adopt union tactics to force the Rabbitohs over the line.
10. Souths lift the cup that had been conveniently flattened for the Australians to take back in their hand luggage.
