JAN MOLBY secured a £5,000 donation for Radio City's Cash For Kids charity after defeating Eric Bristow 2-1 in a special challenge match at the Echo arena in Liverpool on Thursday.

Former Danish international footballer Molby, who made over 200 appearances for Liverpool in a 12-year career at Anfield, took to the stage ahead of the Betway Premier League in Liverpool to take on the five-time World Champion.

The best-of-three leg match was televised live by TV3, the Danish broadcaster under the Viasat banner who screen PDC tournaments, with a £5,000 donation on offer to the winner's charity.

Despite being a rookie on the big darts stage, Molby won the game's opening leg before Bristow hit back to level by landing double top.

The deciding leg saw Bristow unable to finish 134, and Molby stepped in to finish 95 by hitting treble 19, a double three - when aiming for double 19 - and double 16.

"It was a fantastic experience and I'm obviously pleased that I won," said Molby. "Eric's a five-time World Champion and it was a real honour to be up there with him.

"The one bit that nobody could give you any advice on is how you're going to cope with standing on stage.

"As a sportsman you buzz off certain things, and I can understand why the current Premier League players lift their level because it is such a buzz being up there.

"Throwing your darts is one thing, but waiting for Eric to throw was even worse because you know he's capable of hitting 140 which puts you in trouble, but that 95 finish will be engraved in my mind for a long time."

Molby's game was broadcast live in Denmark ahead of the night's Betway Premier League coverage, and he added: "We've dipped into the darts market with the World Championship which was a great success.

"We had really good viewing figures and now we've bought the Premier League and we're trying to show the Danish people that it's a great TV sport. It's been a fantastic success in England and we're keeping our fingers crossed that we can do something similar in Denmark."
