ST HELENS throwers Stephen Bunting and Dave Chisnall are through to day two of the 888.com European Championship in Germany.

However, Michael Smith went out in Friday's opening games.

Reigning champion Adrian Lewis was knocked out of by Jelle Klaasen as the £250,000 tournament began, with fellow seeds Simon Whitlock, James Wade and Gary Anderson also falling by the wayside at the RWE Sporthalle.

Lewis had claimed the third major individual title of his career when he saw off Whitlock at the same venue last year to pick up the European Championship crown.

However, his hopes of retaining the title - and adding to March's UK Open triumph - were dashed with a below-par display as Dutch ace Klaasen capitalised with a 6-4 victory.

Klaasen led 2-0 following a bright start, only for Lewis to win four of the next five legs - including a 118 finish - to move himself 4-3 up.

The former Lakeside Champion, though, levelled with a 100 finish and took out double 18 to regain the edge, before hitting his third 180 of the game in leg ten to set up double 11 for the triumph.

"I'm happy that I won the game but I could have won it easier and had a few missed doubles," said Klaasen, who meets Jamie Caven in Saturday's second round. "Adrian didn't play that well and had a lot of loose darts.

"I didn't start the year too well, but in the last two months I've started to play very well and I hope I can take that on stage.

"I always come into a tournament to win it but I'll take it game by game and I've got to focus on Jamie Caven next because he's a tough opponent and he's finishing well, so I'll have to play better than today to beat him."

Caven booked his place in the last 16 of the £250,000 tournament with a 6-2 defeat of Austria's Mensur Suljovic earlier on Friday, finishing 145 and 120 on his way to the win.

2012 European Champion Whitlock was another of the eight seeded players to join Lewis in being knocked out, as he went down 6-4 to new-look Raymond van Barneveld - who wore glasses on stage for the first time.

Van Barneveld had slumped to defeat against Mervyn King in the World Grand Prix earlier this month, but hit four 180s and some confident doubles as he pulled clear from three-all to take victory over the Australian.

"I still missed a few doubles tonight but my vision is much better," said van Barneveld. "I've had the glasses since December - with my diabetes I sometimes get blurred vision - but I didn't wear them.

"My manager Ben pushed me this week and encouraged me to try something new and wear them, and dartboard looks like HD now! It's amazing - I'm practising really well and the vision is ok.

"I just have to get my confidence back and it's definitely helping me. I have to get used to it and it's a new vision.

"Hopefully in the next few months I can do well, but I'll have another hard game in the second round against Vincent van der Voort - every game now is like a final."

Recent World Grand Prix runner-up James Wade saw his run of form ended by Belgian ace Ronny Huybrechts, who claimed a 6-4 win over the world number six from their contest.

Wade had also won a Players Championship last weekend and was bidding for his first European Championship victory, but never recovered from seeing Huybrechts take a 5-1 lead.

The left-hander cut the gap to 5-4 with a run of three successive legs, including a 106 finish, as Huybrechts missed five match darts, but the Belgian regained his range to seal victory on double 16.

Huybrechts had knocked out Phil Taylor on his way to the semi-finals of the same event last year, and admitted: "James is the man in form because he's reached the finals of the last three tournaments, but he didn't play that well today.

"I went 5-1 up and got nervous, and I was a little bit lucky at the end. It's been like that for me this year, playing quite well but not getting the results, so it was nice to get the finishing touch.

"Last year was great and it would be fantastic this year if I can go one further."

Scottish ace Gary Anderson completed the quartet of seeded stars to be knocked out in Friday's first round as he paid the price for missing three match darts in the deciding leg of his clash with Terry Jenkins.

Anderson led 3-1 early on before Jenkins, aided by finishes of 91 and 116 in successive legs, took a 5-4 lead.

Anderson finished double eight to send the match into a deciding leg, and the pair traded 180s as the former Premier League champion was first to a finish - but his misses at double top and ten allowed Jenkins in to land double ten with his third dart as he capitalised.

"This was a fantastic game," said Jenkins. "Gary went out there firing and I had to stay with him, but after getting in front I thought I'd thrown it away at the end there."

Jenkins will now play Robert Thornton in the second round, after the Scot hit four 180s in a 6-2 win over Austrian youngster Rowby-John Rodriguez.

World Champion Michael van Gerwen enjoyed a 6-3 win over Justin Pipe, which sets him up for a second round clash with Brendan Dolan, who averaged almost 105 in an impressive 6-2 win over against Michael Smith in their first round game.

World number one van Gerwen admitted: "I wasn't at my best but I got the win in a tough game, so I'm happy to be through and I'll hopefully be better in the second round."

Four-time European Champion Phil Taylor defeated Steve Beaton 6-2 and now meets Stephen Bunting, the reigning Lakeside Champion who averaged 102.68 in a 6-1 defeat of Andy Hamilton on his debut in the event.

Number four seed Peter Wright edged past Dutch debutant Benito van de Pas 6-5 in a see-saw contest, as the youngster hit back from 3-0 down to lead 4-3 only to miss one match dart in the deciding leg before the World Championship finalist prevailed.

Wright will now face Belgian ace Kim Huybrechts, who was another 11-leg winner as he overcame Dean Winstanley - who missed one dart at tops for victory in their deciding leg.

Mervyn King was the day's other 6-5 winner as he sneaked past Dutch debutant Christian Kist, who hit six 180s in defeat as the Englishman set up a second round meeting with Ronny Huybrechts.

German hopes in the tournament were ended on the opening day as Jyhan Artut went down 6-4 to Dave Chisnall, the number eight seed who now faces Ian White after the Stoke ace swept past Wes Newton 6-1.

Vincent van der Voort capitalised on missed doubles from Robert Wagner as he claimed a 6-2 win over the Norwegian in their first round clash, setting up an all-Dutch contest with van Barneveld.

Austrian-born Wagner hit five 180s in the game and was on a possible nine-dart finish at one stage, but paid for costly missed doubles as van der Voort landed six finishes from nine attempts and averaged 101 in a strong display.

The second round will be split across two sessions on Saturday in Muelheim, with the tournament concluding on Sunday. Coverage is live on ITV4 and worldwide through the PDC's broadcast partners.
