FORMER professional player Wayne Brown is aiming for glory when he represents England in the World Amateur Snooker Championships next month, writes Adam Leah.

St Helens cue man Brown, aged 44, who included scalps of Steve Davis and Jimmy White during a professional career spanning between 1994 to 2005, will fly to Bangalore, India, to compete against other leading players between November 18 and 29.

Brown, who once reached a career high world ranking of 69, is relishing the opportunity to represent his country.

He said: “I’m hoping to win. I made the last 16 of the European Amateur Championships in Bulgaria earlier this year and it was great to gain the experience of being at the top of the amateur levels. With a bit of luck, there’s no reason I can’t go all the way.”

Brown, who plays for Newton in the Warrington Snooker League, has been town champion in three of the last four years and beat several big name players during his time on the professional circuit.

He defeated six time world champion Steve Davis in 2001 to qualify for the Welsh Open, as well as Jimmy White in the first round of the China Open in 1999.

Brown now works full time in mental health care at Hollins Park Hospital in Warrington and is taking time off from work to pursue success for his country next month.

His world championship ambition does not come cheap, however, and Brown is looking to raise £1,000 to cover the cost of his trip to India by offering advertising space on his waistcoat to businesses.
