SAINTS supporters and players expressed pride tonight after the club secured their first silverware in six years.

Castleford's defeat away to Catalans ensured Saints will finish top of Super League at the end of  the regular season and will lift the League Leaders' Shield.

It was a swift transformation in emotions for supporters who were left dejected by the 17-16 defeat at Huddersfield last night that had opened the door to Cas.

Saints will now face fourth placed Castleford in the opening week of the Super League play offs on Friday.

Fans and players reacted on Twitter to Saints winning the shield, which also guarantees them a place in the new World Club Series next year, featuring British Super League and Australian sides.

Jon Wilkin, Saints injured back rower, said: "Really proud in such a tough year to come out on top. Thanks to our fans, sponsors and families for putting up with us. Roll on the P OFFS."

Skipper Paul Wellens added: "To finish top of the pile isn't easy. Pleased for the lads and especially our supporters who've been great this year. Now the play offs."

Prop Kyle Amor wrote: "Congrats to everyone involed with the club on winning the League Leaders Shield. Very proud to be a part of it. Roll on the playoffs..."

And Alex Walmsley, who was sent off in the first half at Huddersfield last night, tweeted: "I'd be lying if I said I wasnt feeling a little bit relieved... the boys deserved it after there monumental effort last night #LLS2014 #COYS."

Meanwhile, plenty of supporters turned to social media to mock Sky Sports by asking whether the cameras would show the Shield being packed up in Perpignan, France and delivered to Langtree Park.

Some fans had been annoyed at Sky footage showing the silverware being packed into a box and carried off as Saints went down to Warrington a week ago.
