P&O welcomed Moorfield to Burrows Lane on Saturday knowing only a win would keep them in the title hunt, following last week's disappointing defeat against Dalton.

Skipper for the day Kenny Highdale won the toss on a cold, windy day and elected to bowl first.

That decision paid dividend as some tight bowling from the openers Dean Fairclough and Lawrence Mason, reduced Moorfield to 38-4 after 12 overs, with some risky shots from the Moorfield batsmen not paying off.

At this stage P&O were well on top and looked like they could bowl Moorfield out for less than 100, however the 2 batsmen in were determined to not give their wicket away and bat for as long as possible. The next 25 overs brought 98 runs before Paul Dagnall, coming into the side today trapped Stephen Dean for a well made 69, with the score at 134-5.

From then, P&O seemed to bowl with the same accuracy as they had done at the start of the innings, and managed to take the remaining wickets for only 15 runs, with Gareth Halliwell last man out for 32, stumped by stand in keeper Shaun Haigh.

Moorfield set P&O a target of 150, with Dean Fairclough (4-41) and Paul Dagnall (3-22) the pick of the bowlers.

P&O started their innings badly, with Steve Danson hitting one of his trademark cut shots straight to the point fielder for a solitary run, with the score at 3-1.

This brought Shaun Haigh to the crease, promoted up the order by the captain with the instruction to bat through.

Haigh and Mark Viggars then proceeded to take the attack to the Moorfield bowlers, with some excellent running between the wickets the highlight of their partnership until Viggars got a leading edge off Mark Corbett and returned a catch to depart for 21 and the score at 76-2.

Haigh brought up his 50 soon after he was joined by Highdale, and then started to unleash some of the attacking shots, a straight 6 over the bowlers head the highlight, as he accelerated towards a hundred, with Highdale happy to play the supporting role until his dismissal.

Haigh was able to bring up his hundred and see the game home with Vibhor Jain (6 not out), finishing on 113 not out and P&O taking the 20 points.

P&O are now just 3 points behind Southport Trinity with 4 games to play, with the title decider set for the final game of the season when P&O host Southport at Burrows Lane.

Saturday sees P&O travel to Haydock CC, 1pm start.
