SAINTS skipper Paul Wellens lambasted his team's performance during the post match interview with Sky Sports as "embarrassing".

As a sub, he was powerless to influence the early proceedings in which a team devoid of aggression and enthusiasm conceded four unanswered tries to a fired-up Warrington.

He accused the team of not turning up with the right attitude and called for much better if they are to achieve their season goals.

Wellens said: "It was embarrassing by us. As a group we had that start to the season and everyone talked about how good we were playing.

"But for me that was only four or five weeks.

"If you want to go to the play offs and win a Grand Final and achieve the goals we have set ourselves this year you have to turn up with the right attitude every week.

"We have a good support base here that works hard all week and come here to spend good money - and we have to deliver better than that because it was quite frankly embarrassing what we turfed out today."

There is clearly an issue - after a good start to the campaign Saints have now folded with depressing familiarity in the three big games that count.

Without a drastic change in attitude the rest of the season will be a pointless charade, irrespective where they finish because there will be no faith in the team to succeed in the do or die tussles in the play offs.

A disappointed Nathan Brown would not spell out publicly what he had said to the players - but said: "I told the players at half time what I honestly think we need to do to beat Leeds, Warrington or Wigan in a big game.

"It is not for me to say it publicly.

"I don't think it's a coincidence that Wigan have been dominating St Helens for the past four years, let me just say that.

"I know why it is, and have told the players, but am not going to say it here.

"The players are a terrific bunch of guys and turn up and train hard every week, we have talented players and some good hard workers and a reasonably balanced side. But there's an area we need to improve in.

"The people that have won the trophies that are left at the club would agree with that.

"It did not matter if we had won the game today when we fought back, it would not have addressed the issue at we need to as a group and that is staff and players."
