West Park 31 Wigan 30. THE last game of the season saw an exciting and free flowing contest between two well matched sides, with the lead changing hands a number of times and the result in doubt until the final whistle.

The home side eased themselves back into the game after an early Wigan try when Warren Hunt kicked a penalty, only for the visitors to add a second try.

Park’s pressure eventually led to full back Matt Savage dancing over for a fine try.

Wigan added a further good try, aided by more ineffective tackling, the conversion opening up a nine point lead.

Park reduced Wigan’s lead when Savage’s astute pass found Liam Hill in support, the stand off jinking his way over for a try which Hunt neatly converted.

The sides swapped penalties with Wigan taking a three point lead into half time.

Park went in front for the first time with an excellent individual try from man of the match Liam Hill, who side–stepped through for a memorable try.

A Wigan penalty, and a good try from a back row pick up left Park seven points adrift.

But a powerful forward effort saw second row Tom Fortune force his way through a mass of bodies for Park’s fourth try to narrow the gap to two points.

A Hunt penalty gave Park the lead, with the final tense moment in this game of fluctuating fortunes falling to the visitors, whose last minute penalty kick sailed wide of the posts.

With each side scoring four tries Park picked up the maximum five league points from this memorable encounter.

A fitting end to a memorable season which West Park will surely build on for 2014/15 encounters.
