St Helens Star: St Helens Town 1 AFC Liverpool 1 St Helens Town 1 AFC Liverpool 1

Having hit the woodwork three times during the game Town will be a little disappointed they failed to take all three points against neighbours AFC Liverpool.

Town started the game brightly and should have been awarded a penalty inside the opening 60 seconds which could have seen the visitors reduced to ten men. Town Tom Lightbody broke clear of the Liverpool defence before being hauled to the ground as he was about to shoot. Play was waved on by the referee despite the protests of the Town contingent. It was Ligthbody who had Town’s next chance when he headed narrowly over the crossbar from a Mason Ryan left win corner.

On the half hour mark Town took a deserved lead when good work from Danny Owens on the right wing saw his cross find Lightbody whose strike hit the upright and Nathan Parish reacted first to thunder home his fifth goal of the season to put Town in front.

The lead was short lived as a misplaced pass in midfield gifted the visitor’s possession in a dangerous area and after good work from Steven Jones who jinked through two Town defenders, he found Ryan Cox who hit a first time shot past ‘keeper Ciaran Gibson to level the scores Town’s Andy Olsen struck the crossbar late in the first half with a 25 yard effort which beat the visiting ‘keeper but rebounded and the danger was cleared.

The second half became a midfield battle on a very heavy pitch; despite a fair share of possession Town were unable to break the deadlock and had to settle for a point.

Town host Runcorn Town at Brocstedes Park this coming Thursday (3rd April) with a 7.45pm kick off before visiting Alsager Town on Saturday (5th April) with a 3pm kick off.
