CONOR Coady will be heading to Wembley next month after helping Sheffield United reach the FA Cup semi-finals with a 2-0 win over Charlton Athletic.

The on-loan Liverpool midfielder played the full 90 minutes to play a key role in keeping his and United’s cup fairy-tale alive as they knocked out the Championship side.

And Coady, who scored a rare goal in the previous round at Bramall Lane against Notts Forest, was unlucky to see two goals disallowed, having one in each half ruled out for offside.

However, two second half strikes in the space three minutes from Ryan Flynn and John Brayford, saw the League One side become the first club from the third-tier of English football to reach the last four of the famous competition since Wycombe Wanderers in 2001.

The result gives the ex-Rainford Rangers junior, whose loan spell at the Blades has been extended to the end of the season, the opportunity to grace the most famous footballing stage of all under the Wembley arch as United face Steve Bruce’s Hull City in an all-Yorkshire affair.

It will also allow Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers to keep a check on how the talented youngster handles the big occasion.

Playing at Wembley for a place in the FA Cup final was something way beyond Conor’s imagination when he first linked up with the South Yorkshire side on an initial six-month loan last July in order to increase his game time.

“It hasn’t really sunk in yet to be honest, it’s a great result for us, although I think I’ll have to learn the offside rule in future!” the former England Under-20 international captain, who is from Haydock, joked.

“I’m really looking forward to the semi-final now and it will be a great occasion also for the club and the whole city of Sheffield.”

Coady, who turned 21 last month, admits he has improved under the management of United boss, Nigel Clough, the son of legendary manager Brian.

He added: “Nigel’s been massive for me. He’s just great on telling me where I need to improve and he’s also encouraging me to go forward a lot more which is also helping my game.”

The Blades will face Hull City at Wembley on the weekend of April 12-13 after Bruce’s side knocked out League Cup finalists Sunderland 3-0 at the KC Stadium.

Coady is also mindful not to allow the excitement to provide a distraction from United’s league campaign.

The Blades, who have now won nine games in a row, sit mid-table in League One and are keen on ensuring they do not allow their cup exploits see them become involved in any relegation mix.

“We know what we have to do in the league, we’ve got big games coming up and hopefully we’ll get some good results before the semi-final,” added Coady.
