THE “unique” design of the Steve Prescott Cup has been unveiled ahead of Friday night’s Super League encounter between Saints and Hull FC.
The match sees the two clubs at which Steve played the majority of his career go head-to-head in the inaugural Steve Prescott Cup, which will be awarded to the team with the highest score over their two regular season games.
And to honour Steve, the trophy features one of the boots he last used as a professional playing for Hull and Lancashire, which has been mounted and plated gold.
Saints’ captain Paul Wellens and forward Jon Wilkin, both ambassadors of the Steve Prescott Foundation were present to witness the unveiling.
“Both clubs admire Steve greatly – not just for his playing days but his resilience in his fighting illness. I’m sure both sets of supporters will come together on Friday and in future to honour him,” said Wellens.
“I know a few of the Hull lads who think very highly of Prekkie and it certainly gives added significance to the game with it being the first Steve Prescott Cup.”
Hull-born forward Jon Wilkin believes the trophy will be a fitting tribute to Steve.
“I think it’s a fantastic thing to have and really gives a nod to Steve’s competitive spirit.
“The game is special because of Steve.
“He would have played hard in games like this and this will bring the competitive nature that he shared both as a player and a philanthropist.
“It will be an emotional night without doubt and I’m sure a lot of these emotions will come out on Friday.”
Alan Foster, Centre manager of Timpson said: “It’s a unique idea. The Foundation said they wanted a boot and dropped two off.
“We only had a short space of time so we sent them to goldsmiths in Birmingham to be plated and then we mounted it and finished the outside. It took about 10 days in total.”
Ahead of the fixture the re-naming ceremony of the Saints Bridge to the Steve Prescott Bridge will take place on land nearby the bridge.
Supporters are invited to attend.
The match kicks off at 8pm.
