Martin Murray and son Archie in rugby league rivalry

THEY say a top boxer should never drop his guard.

But Saints-supporting Martin Murray admits that’s exactly what he did and now he is facing the consequences by seeing his five-year-old son Archie supporting Warrington.

Martin, who is from Fingerpost but lives in Warrington, has been doing everything in his power to turn Archie from primrose and blue to red and white. But so far it has been to no avail.

Ahead of today’s Super League opener between the two sides, Martin agreed to a special photo shoot to support the game.

The middleweight, whose children’s names appear on his fighting shorts along with the Saints badges, told the Star: “I must admit I dropped my guard when he was little and while I wasn’t looking my wife Gemma and her parents, Liz and Pete, who are both season ticket holders, were getting him Warrington tops and Wolfie teddies.

“I told Mike Rush, the Saints chief executive, and I think he couldn’t believe it.

“He invited him down the club along with my two little girls – who are both Saints fans – but even that didn’t work.

“Last year I was at the Halliwell Jones on the terraces and Archie was stood on the terraces with his Warrington top on – a few of the Saints fans were saying to me ‘what have you done to deserve this?’ “It’s all good fun though. I’m topping Saints to have a good year, maybe it’s our year for the Challenge Cup and who knows it may persuade him to switch sides.”
