GETTING led off the field and sent for x-rays hardly made for the most auspicious of debuts for Saints’ new star man Luke Walsh.

Thankfully Walsh was given the all clear with no harm done following the incident in the last quarter.

Prior to that the crowd got a good glimpse of Walsh, who could be seen verbally whipping his team into position.

Although it will take time to see him really calling the shots, his class obviously shone through.

Here was a half back who could take the ball to the line - admittedly to some cost later in the game.

His goalkicking, too, was only stopped from being 100 per cent when his third touchline effort struck the upright.

And his kicking in open play showed that Saints have a player who will get them to the right end of the pitch.

In attack it was a precision Walsh kick that led to a Wigan error for James Roby’s try.

Nor did he shirk his work in defence and was not afraid to get his shoulder in.

Bernard Platt was on hand to capture the many facets of the new Saints number 7
